QUESTION 26: WHAT IF YOUR ONLY JOB IS TO CLEAR OBSTACLES FOR YOUR PEOPLE?
As you consider the game-changing ideas up to today, it’s likely you are making some adjustments to your leadership style. If you are, that’s fantastic — your chances of being a visionary leader are increasing with each action.
Still, there will be obstacles. Life is messy, and just because you’re listening better, creating more powerful relationships, destroying and rebuilding stale systems, and questioning everything you thought to be real and true — stuff happens.
It’s clear that the more awareness and action you bring to optimizing the performance of your team, the fewer fires you’ll be squashing. So, guess what?
You will have more time to support the actions of your people. Your only job becomes clearing the obstacles that get in the way of accomplishing efficient workflow. As the leader, you have leverage others don’t.
First, you need to have established a clear path toward being informed of the obstacles as they occur. Getting here requires mutual trust, along with a genuine desire to hear the truth.
Once you know what is stopping someone from getting something done, you can remove the shackles and get them moving again.
EXERCISE: Try this today. Ask a question such as “What is in the way of you meeting your goal for this project? Or “What can I do to help make this job easier for you?” or “What hasn’t been working for you, so that you can get this done on time?”.
Then, fix it.
